Compaction Effects

In compacted soil, the space for air and water is squeezed out, and soil particles are pressed together. Compaction reduces the amount of air in the soil, which impairs root growth.

Compaction makes both wet and dry conditions worse by:

  • reducing the water-holding capacity of the soil
  • reducing the ability of excess water to drain
