High traffic loads from heavy machinery force soil particles together. The impact of rainfall and the weight of standing water can both cause compaction. Repeated tillage with the same implement at the same depth will  increase compaction. Rainfall creates smaller soil particles, which settle and create higher  density layers. Wet soil conditions magnify compaction - water acts like a lubricant and llows soil particles to slip even closer together.
