Residue-Free Zone/Yield Well-managed residue improves germination and early growth. Properly sized and mixed residue speeds germination and improves emergence uniformity where lower surface residue levels are necessary. Removing residue at planting still places seed into cold, wet conditions, but a residue-free planting zone with good soil tilth will lead to drier, warmer soil conditions - even with heavy residue between rows.
